Nomex, DMD, and Mylar Insulations

Small and lightweight motors require compact, high-efficiency insulation systems. Common materials include Nomex, DMD, and Mylar.

1. Nomex

  • Aramid paper by DuPont
  • Excellent thermal (up to 220°C), electrical, and mechanical properties
  • Flexible and chemically resistant
  • Ideal for small motors, transformers, cables, and electronics

2. DMD (Dacron-Mylar-Dacron)

  • Triple-layer laminate: affordable, flexible, with good electrical insulation
  • Moisture-resistant, used widely in motor and transformer insulation
  • Lower thermal and mechanical resistance compared to Nomex

3. Mylar

  • Lightweight polyester with aluminum coating
  • Good for average temperature and humidity
  • Flexible but less tear-resistant

Radiology Film as Insulation

  • Not recommended: brittle, low thermal and moisture resistance, poor electrical insulation, short lifespan

Choosing the Right Insulation

  • Depends on temperature, moisture, cost, weight, and mechanical stress
  • Nomex: best for high-heat and stress
  • DMD: best for flexibility and cost
  • Mylar: suitable for compact, low-demand uses
  • Radiology film: not recommended due to safety risks
